The history of the school

The original National School was constructed in 1857 for 120 pupils. Almost two decades later, in 1875, a School Board of seven members was formed. The Board oversaw the districts of Osmotherley, Thimbleby and Ellerbeck. In 1878 the main school building and master’s residence (now Osmotherley Pre-School!) were erected at a cost of £1,047.
Since then, the school building has undergone many changes, the most recent being the construction of an extension linking the old building with the former boiler room. This provided a new classroom, a staff room and school office in 2008.
Since the pandemic, the school hall has been used as a third classroom in addition to a space for lunch, assemblies and PE.
Extensive improvements continue to enhance our outdoor learning spaces. The children have access to a variety of areas for outdoor learning and playtimes. We can now offer plenty of different opportunities for children to explore, create and engage in imaginary play as well as practise sports. This creates a harmonious environment at play times where children of all ages can be seen to be interacting and playing together.
In December 2024, following two years of support from the leaders of YCAT, the school governors made the decision to academise and join the ten other schools in the trust.
